The Westmoreland Woodlands Improvement Association is sponsoring a field trip on Saturday, June 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Laurel Mountain division of Forbes State Forest. The event is free and open to the public. The guides will be Michael DiRinaldo, DCNR service forester (Westmoreland, Washington, and Allegheny counties) and David Planinsek, resource management forester for the Forbes State forest.
The group will meet at the Bureau of Forestry’s district office in Laughlintown (1291 Route 30 East) at 10:00 a.m. on June 4. Or you can carpool from the Barn behind the Donohoe Center, leaving by 9:30 a.m. Mike and Dave will discuss the goals, trends, and challenges of managing high-value hardwood forests. We will then carpool to sites in Forbes State Forest where active forest management is taking place.
Please wear sensible shoes or boots and bring a bag lunch. WWIA will provide the liquid refreshments. Please call Christie at the Westmoreland Conservation District Office (724-837-5271) to preregister by May 31. If it’s raining hard on June 4, call Fred Lau, WWIA’s president, at (407) 756-8020 to make sure the trip is still on.
